The story of the project

In 1996, ten years after the discovery of the Titanic, the legend around that famous ship became even more popular.

Professor Jose Santos from the Instituto de estudios oceanograficos of Cadiz/Spain gave in to his obsession and to his dream: to project a new expedition to the Titanic wreck and to film everything that was still there. What first looked like a crazy idea soon turned out into a fantastic adventure.

An international team of engineers, submarinists and oceanographs worked for three years on this project. In September 1999 Professor Santos not only got down to the Titanic but he also installed a mini high-tech camera inside the sunken ocean liner. "At least we have broken down the frontiers between dream and reality", he said afterwards.

Three years of investigations and tests, more than three months on board of Sirius 2 in Atlantic waters, more than two hundred hours of immersions (inside the mini-submarine Black Shark ) and the incredible work of 38 men and women had made his dream come true

The web-cam

In the cool waters of the North Atlantic, 49°43 North, 49°56 West, 2,5 miles under the sea lies the wreck of the Titanic. Inside on Deck-A, First Class Entrance, Professor Santos placed the live cam facing the legendary Grand Staircase of the Titanic.

The high-tech digital camera as well as three underwater lights get their power from a special kind of battery that must be replaced every two years. The lights are placed under the cam and one on each side of the staircase. Every second the cam transmits a signal to a satellite which sends the live snaps on to our server (sorry, but it is impossible to tell you more details, we would not know where to stop).

You can choose between two cam modus': the live-stream-cam (you may sometimes have some difficulties) and the live-snap-camera. This one you must refresh manually to get your favourites shots from the Titanic-cam.

We hope you enjoy this visual adventure !
